My strategy on "She and I" was to create a clean, natural look that would enhance the beauty of our 2 female lead actors. I also wanted to shape the film within the context of the colorful landscape and the brilliant California Sun; This was not a noir film, it was a comedy and I wanted to take advantage of the lush countryside and warm sun of the Hollywood Hills in summer. One of the challenges on "She and I" was to make the interiors and exteriors appear to share the same natural sunlight; to transition from exterior to interior seamlessly within the same shot. Many scenes would start as an exterior in bright sunlight and end in a dark interior location, usually a trailer, storefront or house. I opted to use old school HMI's instead of LED's to light interiors and exteriors in order to paint an image of a sun drenched Los Angeles.
